The range of cleaners prior to pretreating falls into three categories: Alkaline, Acidic & Solvent.

Alkaline cleaners operate from very close to neutral giving virtually no etch but high cleaning power to the end of the scale giving very heavy etching - normally required for extrusions and prior to anodising. Alkaline cleaners do not normally require corrosion-resisting tanks but do need to be heated.

Acidic cleaners normally operate at ambient temperatures but are normally used at higher concentrations & need acid resistant tanks and other equipment.

Solvent cleaners will not attack the surface and have a broad capability for oil and wax removal but will not remove forming soaps and compounds found on many castings and extrusions.
