Chromate conversions fall into three principal forms:

• Green for architectural components where electrical conductivity through the coating is not a prime requirement;
• Golden where a combination of corrosion protection and electrical conductivity is necessary and
• Clear where electrical conductivity is paramount but durability is not.

Application is normally by dip, but brush and spray techniques are used; the former widely for aircraft and the few components that do not merit a formal dip system. Proper cleaning and deoxidising is essential to achieve the proper performance of the conversion.
